Institute of Archaeology
The Institute of Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University is part of the Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology. Currently, the head of the Institute is Prof. Aren Maeir.
The Institute serves as the framework for the archaeological activities that are conducted at Bar-Ilan University. The members of the Institute deal with a broad range of research activities relating to the ancient cultures of the Land of Israel and its neighbors, conducted in the field, in the laboratories and in the libraries. A central facet of the Institute’s teaching and research activities is the active participation of students in research and field activities, including in several ongoing archaeological field school projects. In addition, the Institute carries out contract (“salvage”) excavations at various sites in Israel.
Under the auspices of the Institute, various research projects are conducted, including active archaeological excavations and surveys, and laboratories for the analysis, research and conservation of various archaeological finds.
In addition, several research centers are active in the Institute. The institute members include faculty, teachers, researchers, and research assistants. A broad range of international research collaborations are also conducted through the Institute.
